Bar Polished
Two similar cylindrical polished bars weighing 5N each lie next to one another in contact.?

Two similar cylindrical polished bars weighing 5N each lie next to one another in contact. A third similar bar is placed on the other two in the groove between them. Neglecting friction, what horizontal force on each bar is necessary to keep them together?

Draw the triangle with vertex at centre of the cylinders. This is, obviously, an equal sides triangle.
Let R be the action/reaction between each bottom cylinder and top cylinder.
Consider top cylinder and resolve vertically,
2*R*Sin60 = 5N -----> R = 5/Sqrt(3)N
Consider one bottom cylinder and resolve horizontally,
Horizontal applied force (H) = R*Cosine60 = 1/2*R = 2.5/Sqrt(3)N = 1.44 N
You should apply1.44 N horizontal opposing force on each bottom cylinder to keep them together.
