We start the modh coinníollach after Easter. Why is it supposed to be so desperate hard? Any advance advice?
I'm reasonably ok at Irish but we'll be starting the modh coinníollach after Easter. I know lots of people hate it and find it wild hard, why? is it really that desperate?
Maybe I'm not the best person to answer because I learned Irish through Irish, not as a subject, but I'll give it my best shot.
The modh coinníollach is the "conditional mood", in simple terms it the Irish version of the "if" and "if .... then" sort of phrases. You'll actually have already done some things that are technically modh coinníollach without even knowing it, for example "más mian leat" - "if you like".
There is a lot more work involved in the mc than, say, the past tense, but since you have longer to do it that shouldn't translate into "more difficult".
There are really 2 main parts to it
- learning which version of "if" or "if not" to use (má, dá, mura etc);
- learning the verb rules and irregulars. You know how in the habitual, the verb gets a different ending if you are talking about yourself (~im or ~ím instead of ~(e)ann or ~onn, well, there are lots of different verb endings in the mc depending on whether you are talking about him, them, me, her, you, etc.
If you have a good teacher and lots of practice, you'll get there easily enough.
