Shower Faucet
how do I stop a leak in the shower faucet?

I have a slow drip in my bathtub faucet and I am having a hard time removing the screws from the faucet. I tried to spray WD40 on it and I believe they are stripped. I can't tighten them or loosen them up to make a differnce. I believe the faucet is orginal, that would make it about 20 yrs old. Any idea on what I can do?

You will have to drill out the screws on the handles, this will ruin the handles if you are not very careful, for a twenty year old valve it may be difficult to replace the handles, check around local hardwares and see if they're available. Sometimes you can loosen them by rapping on the screwdriver to break the corrosion. The best corrosion breaking chemicals have Molybdenum as the main ingredient. You will probably need a handle puller to get them off if the corrosion is that bad and they may not be reusable. When the handles are off, you must find the disassembly point of the stem, some are set back in the wall, in that case you will need a set of shower wrenches to remove them. There are many different valves, if it's a cartridge type just take it to the store and replace it. If it's a washer type, there is a 'seat' that contacts the washer inside the valve, feel the seat with your finger and make sure it is smooth, without any cuts or rough edges, sometimes with a small cut you can get away with a beveled washer, if not you can get a 'seat grinder' to smooth it out. Don't do anything until your sure you can get the parts or you will be showering at the'Y'. Let us know how you made out!
