How can I clean silver threads that have turned black in a ribbon?
This is a bride's headress (69 years old) made of plaited ribbon with what looks like silver threads running through the ribbon. In parts it looks very black and tarnished, I want to clean it enough to restore some of what it originally looked like in order to photograph it for posterity. Does anyone know of a gentle method, please?
If they have tarnished they may be real silver. If it was mine, I would spray it with a solution of ammonia and water, wait 5 minutes and rinse thoroughly. If that makes a difference, do it again until you get the result you want. Of course, don't do this if the fabric can't take getting wet. That will have to be your call, depending what else the ribbon is made of. Ammonia is an excellent cleaner for silver and as far as I know, doesn't damage fabrics or dyes. If the ribbon can handle it, you might brush it a little with a soft brush while it's damp with the ammonia.
